TOOL ENGRAVED PLATE
THE SCALPEL: A JOURNAL OF HEALTH, ADAPTED TO POPULAR AND PROFESSIONAL READING,
AND THE EXPOSURE OF QUACKERY. [Volume 1, No. 1. January, 1849]. Edited by
Edward H. Dixon, M.D. New York: Published by the Editor, and for sale by
Charles H. Ring, . First edition of thepremiere issue of this strange
medical periodical. Includes chapters on Abortionism, Rheumatism, Asiatic
Cholera, Ether and Chloroform, Obstetrics, Tobacco, Hysteria, etc. Last leaf is
a full-page engraving of what I believe is a scary-looking gynecological tool,
which follows ads for the author’s ‘Woman and Her Diseases.’ Good condition,
with uneven browning and wear to covers, last leaf chipped.
