South America'
Antique 19th century atlas map with original hand colouring, 1842
Title of map: 'South America'
The image below shows an enlarged cross section from the centre of the map to
show the level of printed detail. This map is folding hence the centrefold line
may show on the image below:
The map shows shows the relatively consolidated continent of South America
that emerged from the early 19th century wars of Independence from Spain. It
shows the state known today as Greater or Gran Colombia, which encompassed much
of northern South America and part of southern Central America, although it had
by the time of publication dissolved into its constituent parts. It included
the territories of present-day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Venezuela, and
parts of northern Peru, western Guyana and northwestern Brazil. The map also
shows the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata (Provincias Unidas del Río de
la Plata), earlier known as the United Provinces of South America, a union of
provinces in the Río de la Plata region of South America, which emerged from
the May Revolution in 1810 and the Argentine War of Independence of 1810–1818.
It comprised most of the former Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata dependencies
consisting of much or all of present day Argentina, Uruguay and Bolivia - and
had Buenos Aires as its capital.
